Where Healing Meets the Sea: How Youth Burn Survivors Are Finding Hope at Camp Loreto in Baja California Sur

In Baja California Sur, where golden desert landscapes melt into turquoise water, something extraordinary is happening for young burn survivors.

Nestled in the historic coastal town of Loreto, Camp Loreto is offering more than just a getaway; it’s creating a transformative healing experience for children recovering from traumatic burn injuries. From March 12–16, 2026, young patients treated at the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health will travel to this serene destination for a powerful blend of connection, confidence-building, and joy.

Timed with peak whale-watching season in the Gulf of California — often called the “World’s Aquarium” for its extraordinary marine life, this unique burn recovery camp for youth moves healing beyond hospital walls. Here, children and their families step into nature together. They board boats to witness migrating whales, explore UNESCO-protected marine sanctuaries, kayak along pristine islands, and participate in thoughtfully designed group activities that nurture resilience and belonging.

“This program reflects the true spirit of Baja California Sur,” said Jesús Ordóñez, Director General of the Board of Tourism of Baja California Sur. “Tourism is not only about discovering beautiful destinations; it is about healing and strengthening communities, creating bonds, and learning from both our differences and what unites us. Loreto is a place of peace, discovery, and connection, and we are honored to welcome these families and accompany them on a journey of healing. Camp Loreto shows how tourism can bring our regions together through empathy and shared values.”

Camp Loreto is more than a scenic retreat; it’s a holistic youth burn survivor support program rooted in community. Surrounded by Baja California Sur’s warm hospitality and supported by Arizona’s world-class medical care, campers are given a safe space to rebuild self-esteem, strengthen family bonds, and connect with peers who truly understand their journey.

This initiative also reflects a meaningful binational collaboration between healthcare leaders and regional tourism partners. What began as a conversation about travel and destination awareness evolved into a compassionate mission, one that gives young burn survivors the opportunity to rediscover confidence in one of Mexico’s most peaceful coastal settings.

Situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, Baja California Sur offers the kind of restorative backdrop that feels almost poetic for healing. From sportfishing and kayaking to birdwatching and diving, the region is known for adventure, but for these families, the greatest adventure is reclaiming joy. In Loreto, healing doesn’t end in the hospital room. It continues in open water, shared laughter, and the powerful reminder that their stories are defined not by injury, but by strength, courage, and hope.
